Important things to know
Securing an Interview is a great feat, but standing out and impressing the recruiter is even greater and a major achievement. Research shows that it takes a recruiter between 30 seconds and 10 minutes to be impressed by your words. Speaking in an interview is like pitching yourself to determine if you’re a good fit for the role, and the last thing a recruiter wants to hear is you re-reading your CV.
Then the question goes, “How do I create a lasting impression?”

Skills- Who are you and what are you good at? (Relate it to the job description). Talk about your abilities and technology skills that you’ll be bringing to the role.
Experience- Where have you worked and what responsibilities did you take on? Discuss past roles that make you qualified for the job.
Achievements- Your key wins or results. What specific results have you accomplished, and what problems have you successfully solved relating to the job role?
Remember, never deviate from the job role you’re being interviewed for
Traits- What personal qualities/ values define how you work and how has it helped you in your career journey?
Now, let’s give a practical example
I’m being interviewed for the role of a Governance Risk & Compliance Analyst
Let’s go!
‘My name is ___ and I am a GRC Analyst with a strong experience in risk assessment, policy creation and I’m skilled in working with ISO 27001 and SOC 2 frameworks.”
“I have 3 years of experience in the financial services and retail sectors. In my previous role in retail, I supported the GRC function by conducting risk assessments across internal systems, reviewing third-party vendors & assisting with compliance documentation for audits.”
You see how I already tied my skills to the work I’ve done? Let’s continue
“As a result of the compliance audits and documentation that I carried out in my previous organization in retail, I reduced audit findings by 30%, I closed compliance gaps, and successfully we were able to pass our ISO 27001 audit.”
“These experiences have strengthened my attention to detail, my risk-based thinking, and my ability to communicate security requirements clearly to both technical & non technical stake holders, which I believe would help me quickly add value in this role.”
Never be humble about your achievements; always brag about them. All these tell the recruiter what it would feel like to work with you!
You want to create yours?
Use these tips! Take a notepad and
- List your technical skills relevant to your job role
